Body Image and Social Media

Maria Baron

Teens of all ages around the world have increasingly started to pick on their bodies and the way they look. Many teens look up to others such as models or superstars who are influenced by others causing misunderstandings and problems. Social media has caused problems, teens post pictures of their bodies and get both negative and positive comments, causing teens to feel insecure about their bodies.

Over the years the percentage of teens who pick on their bodies has increased and the ages have increased as well, girls of ages 10 and older have set a diet for themselves, wanting to change the way they look. Years ago teens in high school were worrying about their appearance and now a days teens in elementary school are picking on each others bodies.

Social media has affected teens, posting pictures of their bodies and having others state their opinions. Not only that but Photoshop has increased and many edit pictures to make certain parts of their body look “appealing”. Ads, commercials all take part in this as well, they Photoshop models because they think that skinny, slim models “attract” people to buy their products, which is not true. Many body shame and hurt one another due to their body image, we shouldn’t body shame one another, we shouldn’t worry about the way our bodies are shaped and the way they look, we should look at what’s inside and how we are as a person.
