Northwest High School’s varsity cheerleading squad brings spirit and words of encouragement to all the fall sports. They stunt and jump on the sidelines and shout “let’s go northwest!” as our teams lead us to victory. Alongside cheering for other teams the group of 26 girls practices 2 hours after school to get ready for their D1 cheerleading counties competition. On November 12, 2016 Montgomery Blair High School held the annual MCPS Varsity Cheer Competition. The competition is divided into 3 divisions with Northwest performing for division 1, doors opening at 4 and the competition starting at 4:30. In this division Northwest competed against 7 other schools all competing for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place with an extra spirit award on top of that. The girls started getting ready that morning at 10 am to later show up at Montgomery Blair High School. Three girls braided hair while others decided to do others makeup that consisted of a smokey eye gold shadow. All of the girls ate breakfast and lunch together as this was occurring sharing their many emotions of what was going to happen in the next few hours. Three hours after getting ready it was time to hit the road to counties and once at the high school the girls started stretching and warmed up all of their tumbling and stunts to warm their bodies up. The competition began at 4:30 and Damascus High School started of the competition with a bang! Northwest girls went 6th and amazed everyone! The cheer was amazing and the stunts all hit!
