Girls vs Boys Volleyball

With all of the sports provided in the United States, Volleyball is high up there in popularity. The United States. Throughout the years, the women’s team has been more popular than the men’s and the popularity of boys volleyball kept dwindling. The amount of people that watch and/ or join the boys teams are going down. America, more than any other country, views volleyball as primarily a women’s sport. The first thing that pops into one’s mind about why it is less popular is sexism. Boys volleyball is also put in the same category as ice skating and synchronized swimming. Many people say that these sports are “gay” because they consider them to be “feminine sports.” This occurs in many parts of the world, not just the United States. And of course, this isn’t just for indoor volleyball, this also refers to beach volleyball. Before the year of 2012 , there was actually a rule prohibiting women from wearing anything that was less revealing. All they could wear were skimpy bikini’s. Beach volleyball players such as Kerri Walsh Jennings and Elaine Youngs wear this attire. Even though this attire is typical for the type of weather beach volleyball is normally associated with, it seems the main reason why most of the people show up to the games is because of the skimpy clothing. You never hear about the guys doing beach or indoor volleyball as being “eye candy.” All in all, the main reason that boys volleyball is less popular than girls is because of the appeal and sex factor.
