My name is Khalia, and I am making a documentary about African-American History and the effect it has on African-Americans now. My goal for this documentary is to show how the past is coming alive again in today’s time, but then again, I don’t really know if the past really is in the present. I still plan, though, to share my journey with you all, no matter what truth is unveiled.

Recently, I went to the African American History Museum with the Minority Scholars Program. My original intention was to do a story regarding Emmett Till, but as I walked through the museum, I realized that there were numerous stories that needed to be heard.

I didn’t know how I was going to tell these important stories, but the thought of doing a documentary came to me as I was analyzing the history that happened and the present history in the making.

Growing up in this society, I realized that certain topics were rarely ever mentioned and I never really understood why. But, I get it now. It’s a sensitive topic. In order for us to move forward as people and as a country, we need to have these hard conversations so we understand what we did and how we’re not going to do it again.

Now, I welcome you to join me on my journey as I uncover the truth.
