Ms. Lapp

Amanda Pallini

Ms.Lapp is the one and only sign language teacher at Northwest high school. Before she worked in a school she went to school at Gallaudet where she graduated 2011 and 2013 with two master’s degrees. After she graduated she taught at magruder and then came here to northwest in 2013. She is now teaching her fourth year in ASL 1, ASL 2, and ASL3. Her favorite unit is the food unit because who doesn’t love food? Ms. Lapp wasn’t born deaf instead she was born knowing she would lose her hearing as she aged. This is called late deafness. She figured she would learn asl before she lost her hearing for good. Ms. Lapp also has deaf family. She has a deaf blind family member who in short can’t see or hear. In order to communicate with him she signs into his hand. Every year Ms. Lapp takes her ASL 2 classes to Gallaudet to see a play entirely in Sign Language. Ms. Lapp’s favorite play was the little mermaid and this year we saw Dracula. The play is acted out by deaf students of the college or middle school. They anticipate hearing audience members and provide people who can’t interpret.
