After countless protests from the South Korean people, President Park Geun-hye has officially been impeached. On December 9th, legislators voted 234 to 56 to strip President Park of her executive powers and within 180 days, the Constitutional Court has to collect evidence for the impeachment.

The scandal leading up to the impeachment had to do with President Park’s close friend Choi Soon-sil, who is also the daughter of a cult leader. Choi has been accused of manipulating the president, abusing her power, fraud, and influencing the President in state affairs. After Park’s mother was assassinated 1974, her father and former president, Park Chung-hee befriended Choi’s father and since then Park and Choi have been friends.

After countless weeks of protesting from the hundreds of thousands angry citizens, the people have finally got what they wanted, displaying the true meaning of a democracy.
